Did you know that Jenin performs school visits?

Pictures of this workshop were taken at Franklin Elementary in Minnesota.
School visits are a great way to help young readers engage with the text of a book. While most school visits are performed by authors, illustrators can provide an equally enriching experience for students. Illustrations do more than just aid a child’s reading comprehension. They grab a child’s attention, keeping them in the book longer, and incentivize them to reread a book multiple times.
Jenin offers a couple different presentations. Each presentation is tailor made for each grade (Kindergarten – 1st grade, 2nd – 3rd grade, and 4th – 5th grade.) Whether your school chooses a presentation or a workshop, all students will learn about the process of illustration and walk away with a deeper understanding (and appreciation) for the work that goes into creating their books.
If you are interested in booking Jenin for a school visit, please contact Allyson Hickey here. The 2 presentation formats available are featured below:
Going Into Detail: They Built Me for Freedom
How does a reluctant reader turn into an avid reader and a children’s book illustrator? Jenin answers this question in her PowerPoint presentation, “Going Into Detail.” In this presentation, Jenin shows students what her life looked like when she was a kid, and how the pictures inside books helped her pay more attention to stories. She also shares a behind-the-scenes look of how picture books get illustrated, which emphasizes the importance research and reading. Student will walk away with a deeper appreciation of the art inside books and a deeper understanding of Juneteenth. (Presentation time: 45 minutes)

WORKSHOP: Character Design and Shapes!
Shapes are all around us. They can be found in the patterns of our clothes. They even make up the basic building blocks of our favorite illustrated characters. In this hands-on workshop, kids will learn how to stretch and manipulate shapes and design a fabric pattern. After creating a pattern, students will collaborate with Jenin and combine basic shapes to create an original character. (Presentation time: 1 hour)
